How to Add a Watermark in Photopea
Photopea is a free, browser-based image editor that looks and works almost exactly like Photoshop. That makes it a popular choice for adding a watermark without paying for software. Here’s how to do it — and where its limits are when you have more than a couple of images.
Quick answer
Open photopea.com, go to File → Open and load your image. Press T, click the image and type your watermark (or use File → Open & Place for a logo). Lower the layer Opacity in the Layers panel, then save with File → Export as → JPG/PNG.
How to add a text watermark in Photopea
-
Open your image
Go to photopea.com and choose File → Open (or drag the image onto the page). Close the welcome screen if it appears.
-
Select the Type tool
Press T or click the T icon in the left toolbar, then click where you want the watermark and type it, e.g. © Your Name.
-
Choose font, size and color
Select the text (Ctrl/Cmd + A while editing) and adjust font, size and color in the top options bar. Confirm with the ✓ button or by pressing Esc.
-
Move, scale and rotate
Use the Move tool (V) to drag the text. For resizing and rotation use Edit → Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T); drag outside a corner handle to rotate.
-
Reduce opacity
In the Layers panel on the right, select the text layer and lower Opacity to 30–50%. Optional: double-click the layer to add a Drop Shadow or Stroke for readability.
-
Export
Choose File → Export as and pick JPG, PNG or WebP. Set quality and click Save. Use File → Save as PSD if you want to edit the watermark later.
How to add a logo watermark in Photopea
- With your photo open, choose File → Open & Place and select your logo file. It is added as a new layer on top of the photo.
- Resize it with the transform handles and press Enter.
- Position it with the Move tool and reduce the layer Opacity.
If your logo has a white background, you can remove it in Photopea with the Magic Wand (W) and Delete — or simply tick Make white background transparent in WatermarkOn.
How to make a repeating watermark pattern
Photopea supports patterns like Photoshop: create a small transparent document with your text, use Edit → Define New → Define Pattern, then in your photo add a new layer and fill it with Edit → Fill → Pattern. Reduce the layer opacity to finish. It works, but takes a few minutes to set up and the pattern doesn’t scale with images of different sizes.
Photopea limitations for watermarking
- One image at a time. Photopea has no batch processing, so you repeat the steps for every file (scripts exist, but are not beginner-friendly).
- Ads are shown in the free version.
- PDFs open as images/layers; it’s not designed for watermarking multi-page documents.
For a single image, Photopea is great. For 10, 50 or 200 photos — or for PDFs — a dedicated watermark tool is far quicker.
The faster way: watermark without Photopea
Photopea gets the job done, but it was not built for watermarking. If you just need your name or logo on your files, WatermarkOn does it in your browser in under a minute:
- Open WatermarkOn and drop in your images or PDFs (as many as you want).
- Type your text or upload your logo (transparent PNG works best).
- Pick a position — a preset like centred or bottom-right, an exact percentage, or a pixel distance from any corner — then set opacity and rotation.
- Click “Add watermark” and download each file or everything as a ZIP.
