Quick answer

In your document click Insert → Watermark. In the side panel choose Text (type it, then set font, size, color, transparency and diagonal/horizontal) or Image (upload it, adjust scale and fade). Click Done; the watermark appears on every page.

How to insert a watermark in Google Docs

  1. Open the watermark panel

Open your document and click Insert → Watermark. A panel opens on the right.

  2. Choose Text or Image

Select the Text tab to type a watermark like DRAFT, or the Image tab to upload a logo from your computer, Drive, Photos or a URL.

  3. Format a text watermark

Choose the font, size, bold/italic and color, adjust the transparency, and pick a diagonal or horizontal orientation.

  4. Format an image watermark

Adjust the Scale and keep Fade enabled so the image sits lightly behind the text.

  5. Finish

Click Done. To edit or remove it later, open Insert → Watermark again and change it or click Remove watermark.

Google Docs watermark limitations

  • The watermark is always centred; you can’t place it in a corner or at an exact position.
  • Only one watermark per document, and it appears on all pages.
  • No tiled/repeating option.
  • Anyone with edit access can remove it.

Protect shared copies: watermark the PDF

When you send a document outside your organisation, download it with File → Download → PDF document and add the watermark to the PDF instead. With WatermarkOn you can position it anywhere (presets, % or pixel offsets), rotate it at any angle, repeat it across the page, add a logo and watermark several PDFs in one go — all without uploading the document.

The faster way: watermark without Google Docs

Google Docs gets the job done, but it was not built for watermarking. If you just need your name or logo on your files, WatermarkOn does it in your browser in under a minute:

  1. Open WatermarkOn and drop in your images or PDFs (as many as you want).
  2. Type your text or upload your logo (transparent PNG works best).
  3. Pick a position — a preset like centred or bottom-right, an exact percentage, or a pixel distance from any corner — then set opacity and rotation.
  4. Click “Add watermark” and download each file or everything as a ZIP.
